With each passing day it seems we hear the term A.I. more and more. Just what is A.I., and as senior members of our society, what exactly does it mean for you and I? What is the impact that A.I. may have on our lives? There is so much differing information as to the possible pros and cons of A.I. How do we sift through this vast amount of information? This blog is a basic introduction into the world of A.I. and its possible impact for seniors overall.

What is A.I. or to use the full term - what is artificial intelligence? As its name implies, artificial intelligence is the culmination of computer systems that perform tasks usually required by human intelligence. Such tasks may include but are not limited to understanding human language, recognizing various images and speech, learning, problem solving and decision making.

A.I. works using algorithms and data to mimic human intelligence enabling these systems to learn, reason and problem solve. A great deal of data is needed to learn from. Algorithms are used to analyze this data to identify patterns and make predications. Algorithms are the set of instructions that guide the learning process.

What are some current examples  of AI that may help seniors to live as safely and independently as possible?

  1. Cognitive Assistance: There are several A.I. apps and virtual assistants such as Siri and Alexa that are currently available to remind individuals to take their medications, develop lists of important information, provide appointment reminders, play music, control smart home devices and alert individuals as to important information to remember. There are also many apps available to individuals in order to sharpen their cognitive skills to enhance memory and mental sharpness.

  2. Health Monitoring: There are a variety of wearable devices and home sensors that have the ability to ensure medications are taken, alert caregivers, detect falls and call emergency services when a health emergency may occur.

  3. Smart Home Technologies: These are devices that are controlled via WiFi and are internet connected to automate and control various aspects of the home. Systems can be put into place that can control lighting in the home, control the temperature, provide monitoring of individuals and even lock doors.

  4. Social Engagement: There are a variety of virtual companions and/or chatbots that provide conversational interaction, play games and encourage users to communicate with family or friends. Siri and Alexa are 2 examples of Chatbots. Another example of a Chatbot is IBM’s Watson Assistant which leverages the company’s renowned AI capabilities to deliver an intelligent and contextual chatbot experience. Chatbots can help with banking, provide travel plan options and can be used for entertainment needs such as the Insomnobot 3000, which offers late night conversations.

The world of artificial intelligence is here to stay. Although it may seem intimidating, the use of A.I. is truly an opportunity for senior users. It has the potential to allow individuals to stay in their homes more safely and independently. It allows caregivers and family members the ability to monitor their loved ones to ensure their safety needs are met. It provides socialization opportunities and even monitors health needs. These are but a few of the possibilities that artificial intelligence has to offer.

The world of artificial intelligence continues to develop at an astounding rate providing even more opportunities for individuals to live safe and independent lives. Future trends in A.I. are focused upon developing robotic systems for personal care in order to assist  with bathing, mobility, or household chores of individuals. Transportation systems are currently being developed that will revolutionize the industry. These systems will enhance safety, sustainability and enhance efficiency. Advancements include self-driving cars, optimized logistics and smart traffic management.

These are but a few of the exciting possibilities that are currently in development. We will go into more depth in each area of A.I. and review the pros and cons of each in future blogs. AI is transforming aging by making life safer, healthier, and encourages us to be more connected—today and in the future. Let’s begin to understand all of this together!
